History of the lookout tower
The tower was built in 1902 on the site of an older lookout tower. It was designed by Wilhelm Kreis and modified by Reinhold Döhling for viewing purposes. The tower was officially opened on August 31, 1902 and became an important symbol of Vogtland. You can still find the original memorial plaques, reliefs and remains of the fireplace here.
Architecture and design
The tower stands on a massive square base of 11 × 11 m. The structure combines granite blocks and a slate interior. The entrance is decorated with a relief of the imperial eagle, inside there is a suspended staircase with 65 stone steps and a spiral iron staircase to the lookout. The result is a monument with a distinctive silhouette, topped with a low tent roof.
