Bismarck Tower on Keilberg

At the top of the Keilberg near Schneeberg stands a slender, battlemented tower that was dedicated to Otto von Bismarck in 1899. Its unconventional architecture and impressive height make it one of the most interesting viewpoints in the Ore Mountains.

History of the lookout tower

The lookout tower was built in 1893 and was originally called the Keilbergturm. In 1899 it was renamed the Bismarck Tower and a medallion with his image was added above the entrance. In 1900 a mountain hut was added, which was also visited by the King of Saxony. The tower served as a place for views and as a symbolic tribute to the Chancellor.

Architecture and design

The tower has a massive stone base and a slender octagonal superstructure with battlements. Red clinker bricks combined with light sandstone create a contrasting facade. Up 101 wooden steps you can climb to an open observation deck with views of the Schneeberg, Klínovec and Fichtelberg.
