History of the lookout tower
The idea of building the tower was conceived in 1899, but due to the war it was not opened until 1921. The project was modified by the building inspector Hans Gräßel. The tower is divided into three parts – the base, the prismatic tower with projections and the top platform. There is a bust of Bismarck in the memorial hall and the tower also carries other symbolism. Today it is being restored.
Architecture and design
The tower is built of embossed granite in Cyclopean masonry. The lower cubic base has a gallery with a battlement, which is followed by a central prismatic part with projections. The tower is topped by a platform where a circular fireplace was originally located. The interior contains a memorial hall and several levels of viewpoints accessible via stone and reinforced concrete staircases.
