History of the lookout tower

The construction of the tower was initiated in 1899 and was completed according to the design of Wilhelm Kreis. The land was donated by Duke Alfred of Saxe-Coburg. The tower completed the visual axis with the Veste Coburg Castle and the Callenberg Castle. A bronze cast of the imperial eagle decorated the eastern facade. Today, the tower has been closed since 2021 due to reconstruction.

Architecture and design

The tower is built of sandstone and consists of a massive prismatic pylon with three-quarter columns supporting an architrave and a three-stage superstructure. The entrance portal is located on the west side, above which is a plaque with the year 1901. An internal wooden staircase is lit by slit windows and leads to a viewing platform.
