History of the lookout tower

The tower was created on the initiative of a military association and was ceremonially opened on July 15, 1900. Architect Wilhelm Kreis first implemented his winning design from 1899 here, laying the foundation stone for the typical form of Bismarck towers. The original fireplace was removed after a few years and replaced by an observation deck. Memorial plaques with the names of the initiators have been preserved above the entrance.

Architecture and design

The tower consists of a massive square pylon made of roughly worked granite. It is flanked at the corners by three-quarter columns supporting a distinctive cornice and superstructure. Inside is a spiral staircase illuminated by windows. The upper part is finished with a glazed tambour with a low roof, from which a view opens up of Bohemia, Vogtland and Franconia.
