History of the lookout tower
The Bismarck Tower on Zelená Hora was built on the initiative of a local association in 1909 as a replacement for the original wooden tower. The building, designed by architect Rolf Beier, bears elements of both Germanic and Protestant symbols. The tower was a place of honor for Chancellor Bismarck and also carried a bowl of fire as a symbol of unification and strength. Significant elements include a bronze bust of Bismarck, runic inscriptions and historical reliefs.
Architecture and design
A massive pylon made of local slate rises from a square base. The facade is decorated with arcades and pillars, and the upper floors have balconies and galleries. Inside, a spiral granite staircase with 65 steps leads, and the walls are decorated with stone slabs with dedications. The tower bears a number of mythological and religious symbols and forms the archetypal dominant of the Green Mountain.
